As you can see, the monk is meditating, he is focused on his breath and at peace. What does this have to do with the question?

If a student is unable to focus on schoolwork or anything in general, meditation is an excellent exercise to enhance focus.

According to Harvard, ” mindfulness-based stress reduction program helped quell anxiety symptoms in people with generalized anxiety disorder, a condition marked by hard-to-control worries, poor sleep, and irritability.” (1) (Reference down below).

What that means is that meditation reduces anxiety, and with reduced anxiety, you can study better.

It is extremely important to maintain focus while studying as you will be able to get the material remembered in a shorter period of time, as well as having it feel like it sucks less. Focus, is a skill that is useful in all walks of life and it does not matter what you do.

Every morning you get up, first thing is to meditate for 10 minutes. That is it, to help you get started check out these apps on your phone.

i. Tunes or Spotify Premium (assuming you have one of those accounts)- If you search the term “meditation” on there you will get a lot of results and just pick anyone to get started.

Insight Timer- This app is specifically just for meditation and there are guided meditations lasting anywhere from 1min-2 hours (or at least what I have seen so far).

When you have the 10 minutes of time and the app, then figure out where you want to do the meditation. Me personally, I meditate on a couch like this or in a sauna room (very quiet place from personal experience).

Once you are laid down or sitting up straight, just breathe deep and focus on your breath. Now if doing this for the first time it will feel hard to shut down your mind but relax.

Everyone has different levels of difficulty trying to meditate. If you are a first-timer, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. When you have practiced this meditation enough times, then you will find that studying will be a lot easier. For tips on how to study better, CHECK OUT THIS ANSWER HERE.

If this is your first time doing meditation and if you do it correctly you will notice a significant difference from the first time doing it. If you are more experienced, however, the effects will not be so significant. Or even if you are already good at focusing.

For those that are seeking the ability to be better able to focus while studying, meditation is an excellent way to do just that. The more you do this and the sooner you get started, the bigger the benefits will be right away.

Another technique and this one was recommended by multi-billionaire investor Warren Buffet, The 5/25 Rule. Which composes of a few simple steps:

Write down 25 things that you want to accomplish in the future.

Circle and number the 5 most important things on the list.

Completely cross out and forget about the remaining 20 items.

This was actually an exercise that Warren Buffet, had his private jet pilot do. The reason behind this is that you want to have selective focus. How you stay focused on something is making sure you do not have a bunch of other so-so committed activities you are doing on top of your highest priorities (2).

By simply writing down the goal, you are more likely to achieve the goal. Also because I am sharing what I will be doing to a lot of people, I just created peer pressure to where I must complete this, or I look bad in front of everyone. So now I am even more likely to complete this and I intend to master this chapter.
